Riyadh, Saudi Arabia — Saudi Arabia’s General Authority of Civil Aviation (GACA) and Airbus signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on environmental sustainability during the 2025 Paris Air Show. This MoU underscores their joint effort to reduce aviation’s environmental impact and promote sustainable sector growth.

The Minister of Transport and Logistics, Eng, formalized the historic agreement in Paris. Saleh bin Nasser Al‑Jasser, and GACA President Abdulaziz bin Abdullah Al‑Duailej. It aligns with Saudi Arabia’s Civil Aviation Environmental Sustainability Program (CAESP) and bolsters the Kingdom’s commitment to balancing aviation expansion with environmental stewardship.

Environmental Collaboration in GACA Airbus Sustainability MoU

Under the MoU, GACA and Airbus plan to exchange knowledge and launch joint initiatives in low‑carbon (LCAF) and sustainable aviation fuel (SAF). They will also focus on capacity building through specialised training programmes. These efforts aim to advance green aviation technologies and cultivate national expertise in environmental sustainability.

Capt. Suleiman Al‑Muhaimidy, GACA’s Executive Vice President for Aviation Safety and Environmental Sustainability, described the MoU as a milestone. He stressed the vital role of global partnerships in empowering future Saudi leaders to lead green transformation in aviation.

Meanwhile, Gabriel Simiolas, Airbus Head for the Middle East and Africa, called the agreement “an advanced step toward a more sustainable global aviation industry.” He highlighted its alignment with Saudi Vision 2030, noting the Kingdom’s ambition to set a global example in sustainable development through technological innovation and cooperation.

Decarbonising Regional and Global Aviation

The MoU is expected to accelerate decarbonisation across regional and international aviation. Through joint research, pilot projects, and SAF deployment, GACA and Airbus will support shared climate resilience targets and stimulate industry-wide innovation.

This partnership strengthens Saudi Arabia’s green aviation pathway under Vision 2030. It also supports the global aviation sector’s goal to reduce carbon emissions and develop sustainable fuels.

Implementation Roadmap for GACA Sustainability Agreement

Over the coming months, GACA and Airbus will establish working groups to identify specific R&D projects. These teams will focus on SAF production facilities, certification processes, and pilot training. Both parties aim to report progress at upcoming climate and aviation conferences.

Together, they plan public‑private partnerships to fund capacity‑building initiatives. Training programmes will empower Saudi youth and women to pursue careers in green aviation. Airbus may also provide guidance on localising green fuel infrastructure and sustainability metrics.

In summary, the GACA–Airbus MoU marks a significant advance in sustainable aviation cooperation. It reinforces Saudi Arabia’s position as a forward-looking aviation hub, ready to pioneer eco-friendly air travel and climate-conscious innovation.

The Saudi Standard’s View: A Calculated Step Toward Climate-Smart Aviation

Saudi Arabia’s aviation sector is expanding rapidly. Yet, expansion must not come at the cost of environmental integrity. The Memorandum of Understanding between GACA and Airbus, signed at the 2025 Paris Air Show, represents more than symbolic diplomacy—it is a measurable step toward decarbonising one of the world’s most complex industries.

The agreement prioritizes sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) and capacity building, aligning with the Kingdom’s long-term strategic vision under Saudi Vision 2030. It also demonstrates that national ambitions for global connectivity can coexist with climate responsibility.

However, the success of this MoU hinges on implementation. Joint working groups and pilot programs must deliver tangible progress in green fuel infrastructure, workforce readiness, and emissions reporting. Transparency, accountability, and investment will be critical in turning this framework into a functional reality.

This agreement also sends a strong message internationally. It signals Saudi Arabia’s readiness to lead in climate-era aviation through innovation and meaningful partnerships, not just policy declarations.

If GACA and Airbus maintain momentum, this MoU could become a benchmark for public-private cooperation in regional and green aviation.
