Dhahran, Saudi Arabia — In the heart of the Kingdom’s energy hub, the Saudi Film Festival Golden Palm program will unite celebrated Saudi filmmakers at Ithra from June 26 to 28. This initiative reflects Saudi Arabia’s growing commitment to its film industry, which is seeing unprecedented public and professional momentum.
The King Abdulaziz Center for World Culture (Ithra) and the Saudi Cinema Association are collaborating to present the Golden Palm Award films. Festival Programs Manager Nada Al-Luhaidan said the program supports the festival’s goal of expanding cinematic access. It also celebrates festival achievements through ongoing screenings, both locally and globally. Recent successes include similar programs at Hayy Cinema in Jeddah, AlUla’s Cinema AlJadidah, and Tokyo’s Short Shorts Film Festival. There, Saudi award-winning films gained international attention.

The second evening, June 27, features documentaries that explore Saudi life. Joey by Faiza Ambah follows three young boys as they discover the cinema in Jeddah. Market Dynamo by Ali Baqer observes a 60-year-old auctioneer at a second-hand market. Finally, Yellow by Mohammed Salman reflects on the memory of Saudi Arabia’s once-iconic yellow taxis.

Midway through the program, Ithra will host a panel discussion titled Saudi Cinema until 2025. Researcher Dr. Mohammed Al-Bashir will lead the session. He will examine the Kingdom’s film industry, which has evolved from individual efforts to institutional maturity. The panel will also explore changes in storytelling, audience preferences, and cinema’s growing social role.
