SPA — Saudi Arabia has launched a new initiative to improve water resource management and reduce flood risks. The Ministry of Environment, Water, and Agriculture signed a key contract focused on optimizing groundwater and surface water use. The project also includes infrastructure upgrades to strengthen national water security over the long term.
Deputy Minister for Water Dr. Abdulaziz Al-Shibani said the effort supports the Kingdom’s strategy to regulate non-renewable groundwater and prevent depletion and pollution. The program aims to improve resource sustainability through controlled drilling, targeted regulation, and smarter usage based on data.
Flood Mitigation and Water Use Optimization
The initiative includes rainwater harvesting design, flood control studies, and strategies for managing watersheds and basins. It also features systems for monitoring and evaluation, helping Saudi Arabia better respond to climate-driven water issues and reduce hydrological risks.
Moreover, Dr. Al-Shibani noted that the Ministry will adopt international best practices. These will focus on identifying renewable sources and building long-term infrastructure to meet rising water demand.
This initiative aligns with the National Water Strategy—a key part of Vision 2030. The strategy emphasizes better efficiency, environmental protection, and stronger private sector involvement. As a result, it connects Saudi water management with broader goals for resilience, sustainability, and economic reform.
THE SAUDI STANDARD’S VIEW: Water Reforms Secure National Resources and Resilience
The Ministry’s contract for water use and flood control clearly reflects its move to implement Vision 2030’s environmental goals through the National Water Strategy.
- Protecting vital reserves: The focus on controlling groundwater use and limiting drilling reflects a strong commitment to preserving Saudi Arabia’s most critical water sources for future generations.
- Planning for climate risks: New infrastructure—such as rainwater harvesting and basin design—shows a proactive approach to climate adaptation and risk reduction.
- Maximizing renewable sources: The project aligns with global sustainability efforts while meeting growing domestic needs by turning to surface and renewable water supplies.
- Strengthening governance: Monitoring systems and private sector participation will improve oversight and bring modern tools into the water sector.
In summary, the Saudi water resource management marks a shift from reactive water management to a forward-looking model grounded in resilience and sustainability. As Saudi Arabia adapts to rising demand and climate challenges, it sets a strong example for regional leadership in water stewardship.
