SPA — Saudi Arabia has launched its first autonomous vehicle trials in Riyadh, marking a significant step toward achieving its smart mobility goals under Vision 2030. The Saudi autonomous vehicle launch was inaugurated on Wednesday by Eng: Saleh bin Nasser Al-Jasser, Minister of Transport and Logistic Services and Chairman of the Transport General Authority.

This pilot phase is designed to test smart mobility technologies in real-world conditions. It will take place at key sites, including King Khalid International Airport and major roads across Riyadh. Autonomous vehicles will carry passengers under the supervision of onboard safety officers, ensuring secure operations and reliable data collection.

The trials result from broad cooperation between public and private entities. Government partners include the Ministry of Interior, SDAIA, the Digital Economy, Space and Innovation ecosystem, the General Authority for Survey and Geospatial Information, and the Saudi Standards, Metrology and Quality Organization.

Importantly, the program also involves private-sector innovators such as Uber, WeRide, and AiDriver. These firms bring advanced autonomous systems and international expertise, highlighting Saudi Arabia’s public-private partnership model in driving innovation.

Minister Al-Jasser stated that the project supports the National Transport and Logistics Strategy. He emphasized the importance of enabling AI-powered mobility while building a strong regulatory framework to support long-term deployment.
