Riyadh, July 21, 2024 – The Saudi Food and Drug Authority (SFDA) has launched its awareness campaign “Summer and Tourism” in conjunction with the summer season, which is characterized by high temperatures. These conditions can alter some pharmaceutical properties, thereby affecting drug efficacy, and can damage foods exposed to inappropriate storage conditions such as direct sunlight and high temperatures. This creates an environment conducive to bacterial growth and spoilage, reducing the product’s shelf life. The campaign also aims to raise awareness about the safe handling of insecticides and rodenticides due to their increased use.
The SFDA’s campaign includes educational materials related to food allergies, the benefits of consuming water-rich fruits and vegetables to avoid dehydration during summer, tips for obtaining safe food while traveling, best practices for storing medications during travel, and how to handle cosmetic products during the summer.
At the campaign’s launch, the SFDA warned travelers against consuming uncovered foods or food from street vendors, emphasizing the importance of purchasing products from trusted sources. It stressed the need to check expiration dates before consumption, read the nutritional labels, and ensure the food’s safety. Following these guidelines contributes to food safety during travel.
The SFDA also highlighted the importance of thoroughly cooking meats, poultry, eggs, and fish before consumption, ensuring they are cooked to the proper level of doneness and stored under healthy and sanitary conditions.
