Saudi Sustainability Leadership on Display in Cairo
Cairo, Egypt—Saudi Arabia reaffirmed its global role in climate action by advancing its sustainability leadership during a key regional meeting in Cairo. Minister of Environment, Water and Agriculture Eng. Abdulrahman Al-Fadley delivered remarks at the 18th Board of Trustees meeting of the Center for Environment and Development for the Arab Region and Europe (CEDARE).
Green Momentum Led by Saudi Arabia
Minister Al-Fadley emphasized the growing environmental momentum in the Arab world. He noted that Saudi Arabia continues to lead this movement. Specifically, he referenced the Middle East Green Initiative, which supports regional cooperation on land restoration, vegetation protection, food security, and climate adaptation.
Furthermore, he praised CEDARE’s efforts to expand Arab-European partnerships. The center is vital in facilitating knowledge transfer related to environmental policy and sustainable development.
This vision reflects Saudi sustainability leadership’s broader goals, which prioritize collaboration and long-term impact.
Reform and Regional Integration
The minister also stressed the importance of reviewing CEDARE’s mission and called for revising its operational framework, financial structure, and governance systems. These updates, he explained, would improve the center’s efficiency and ensure continuity.
In addition, the board explored ways to promote circular economy models within the Arab region. The minister noted that stronger cooperation between countries and regional bodies will support joint climate goals and reinforce Saudi Arabia’s leadership in environmental innovation.
The Arab Region’s Global Climate Role
Minister Al-Fadley highlighted the growing global presence of Arab nations in climate governance. Egypt hosted COP27 in 2022, followed by the UAE’s leadership of COP28 in 2023. Saudi Arabia recently hosted COP16 of the UN Convention to Combat Desertification and led World Environment Day celebrations in 2024.
Moreover, the Global Water Organization launch in Riyadh marked another milestone in the Kingdom’s efforts to protect critical resources. This initiative aligns with the country’s broader green strategy.
In conclusion, Minister Al-Fadley reaffirmed the Kingdom’s readiness to strengthen regional and international climate partnerships. Through continued Saudi sustainability leadership, he called for practical, coordinated solutions to shared environmental challenges.
