SPA — The early harvest of Madinah dates has started arriving at central markets across Saudi Arabia. This marks the beginning of the seasonal influx of premium dates for which the region is famous. The annual Madinah dates harvest runs from June to November, boosting both local trade and national food supply.
The Ministry of Environment, Water, and Agriculture confirmed that Madinah produces 58 date varieties. Among these, 37 are well-known varieties, including Ajwa, Anbara, Safawi, Ruthana, Rabiah, Shalabi, Halwa, Barni, Barni Al-Madina, Barni Al-Ula, Al-Bayd, Al-Ays, Sukrah Al-Madina, and Sukrah Al-Bayd. The region also cultivates 21 lesser-known types, such as Afandiya, Rubai, Saqai, Tabarjili, Sukrah Yanbu, Al-Jawazna, Al-Barqah, and Al-Bartaji.
Seasonal Growth
By the end of 2023, Saudi Arabia’s total date production surpassed 1.9 million tons. The Qassim region led with 578,000 tons, followed by Riyadh with 453,000 tons. Madinah contributed over 343,000 tons, securing its place among the country’s top date-producing regions.
Saudi Arabia has approximately 37.1 million date palm trees. Out of these, 31.8 million are fruit-bearing palms. Qassim holds the highest number with more than 10.7 million palms, followed by Riyadh with 8.08 million, and Madinah with 8.02 million fruit-bearing trees.
These figures highlight Saudi Arabia’s growing role in the global date industry. The Kingdom continues to invest in diverse varieties, modern farming methods, and expanding market access.
